Kenyon Completes Wire-To-Wire Win In Season Finale At

 ILOVENY Championship

ALBANY, N.Y., Sept. 7, 2008 – Sarah-Jane Kenyon of Queensland, Australia, earned her second professional win in wire-to-wire fashion at the $100,000 ILOVENY Championship, finishing with a final-round score of 2-under-par 69.

Kenyon carded a three-day total of 9-under-par 204 and had a three-stroke cushion over three-time Tour winner Mindy Kim (67) of Diamond Bar, Calif., who finished at 6-under-par 207.

Sophia Sheridan (69) of Guadalajara, Mexico, moved up into the top 10 of the season money list, finishing third at 4-under-par 209.

Rookies Vicky Hurst (73) of Melbourne, Fla., and Jenny Suh (72) of Fairfax, Va., tied for fourth at 2-under-par 211.

Kenyon moved from eighth to third place on the season money list as she pocketed the final winner’s paycheck of $14,000. She also received a pair of diamond earrings from a local jeweler in Albany.

“I was feeling nervous all day, but I managed to keep it going,” said Kenyon, a current member of the LPGA Tour. “It was really nice to get off to a good start and I was fortunate enough to finish it out. I’m very happy to come away with a win.”

Kenyon widened her lead to five strokes in final-round play before she made the turn on the back nine. She kicked off the day with a 15-foot putt for birdie on the first hole and had a bogey-free round intact before three-putting No. 18.

“I felt pretty good today,” said Kenyon, a 2005 Duramed FUTURES Tour winner. “I haven’t been able to get my putting going until the last few weeks, but it’s been a long time coming.”

Kenyon’s modified conditioning regimen paid off on Sunday. She said a combination of going to the gym five times a week and running made a difference after walking 29 holes on the hilly Capital Hills at Albany course.

“I felt fresh and I felt good,” Kenyon said. “I’m always set on going to LPGA Q-School every year. It will be nice to able to spend some extra time at home and see the family.”

The 19-year-old Kim finished a storybook season by collecting $10,000 as she finished second on the season money list. Kim put together a streak of five birdies in six holes that included three putts from 20 feet.

“I was hanging in there today, but I tried not to look at the leaderboard,” said Kim, a second-year Tour professional. “I thought my ball striking was OK, but I didn’t know I was going to play this well. I feel blessed to finish on a very strong note.”

Meldrum Becomes Final Recipient of Sunday Low Round Award

Lisa Meldrum of Montreal, Quebec, posted a final-round tally of 2-under-par 69 to become the final recipient of Duramed’s season-long promotion of the Sunday Low Round Award. Meldrum edged amateur Stephanie Kim of Orlando, Fla., on first-round tiebreak criteria and will receive an 8 GB Apple iPod Touch.

“I played pretty well through the first nine holes yesterday in the rain,” Meldrum said. “Unfortunately, I hit a rough five-hole stretch this morning to end my second round and that was that. I’ve been hoping to get the iPod since the beginning of the year, so I’m really excited to get it in my last try.”

Meldrum wrapped up her second round with a frustrating 6-over-par 77, and despite having to play another 18 holes, found a way to recompose herself as the final round got underway soon after.

“This will give me some confidence heading into Q-School next week,” said Meldrum, who had one bogey in final-round play. “It was really windy out there today, but I was prepared for the day and was feeling fine.”

George Fights Food Poisoning to Complete Season Finale

Two-time Duramed FUTURES Tour winner Stephanie George of Myerstown, Pa., wasn’t about to put a “WDI” [withdrew for illness] by her scorecard, even after a night where she was able to get less than an hour of rest. George was hit hard with a case of food poisoning after a bad grilled chicken sandwich at a local bowling center, spending most of the night with the stomach flu.

George missed one tournament as a junior, withdrawing because of an eye infection when she was 15, but she wasn’t about to do it again.

“It felt like razor blades were in my stomach all day,” George said. “I wasn’t about to put a ‘WDI’ on the scoreboard in the last event of the year.”

The former LPGA Tour member was in the final-round twosome with Sunday Low Round Award winner Lisa Meldrum and almost didn’t make it to the tee in time because she was doubled over in pain. Despite the pain, George fought her way to a tie for 46th.

“It’s really funny what you concentrate on when you’re not thinking about golf,” George added. “I really want to thank Lisa (Meldrum) for slowing down play today for me.”

Ginter Takes Advantage of Rare Tour Appearance

Seven-time Duramed FUTURES Tour winner Sue Ginter of Appleton, Wis., made just her second appearance of the year as the regular season closed this weekend. Ginter, a current LPGA Tour member, entered in the season-opening Bright House Networks Open and played one LPGA event this year.

“I thought I was hitting it well, but I don’t have that same feel,” said Ginter, who ranks fourth on the Tour’s career money list. “I made some good, aggressive, confident swings today and I felt like my play was steady.”

Ginter was joined this weekend by fellow University of Texas alum Cindy Figg-Currier of Austin, Texas. Ginter, a 1989 UT graduate, stayed at Figg-Currier’s apartment on a recruiting trip in Austin, where Duramed FUTURES Tour alum and current LPGA pro Sherri Steinhauer also resided.

The 11-year veteran was complimentary of the Tour after she carded an even-par 71 in final round-play to finish solo 11th.

“I really have good memories on the Duramed FUTURES Tour,” Ginter said. “The camaraderie is great. Everyone is in the same boat and you have a chance to develop a lot of long-lasting relationships.”
